ST
GEORGE’S, Grenada, March 5, 2011 – The national senior men’s
team could have a heavy schedule of international friendlies in preparation for
the CONCACAF Gold Cup Tournament in June.
President of the Grenada Football Association (GFA) Cheney
Joseph said that efforts are ongoing to ensure the team gets quality matches
ahead of the tournament in the United States.
He said that the GFA has requested friendlies against
Canada, China, Jamaica, Qatar and Venezuela and expecting some positive
responses.
Joseph said that the GFA will also seek the involvement of
the Grenada Government to ensure that the team gets at least one ‘quality’
opposition.
"If we are unable to get immediate responses from
those associations, I am willing to try diplomatic avenues to secure the games,"
Joseph said.
"The national team is no walk-over and we believe we
can match up to those teams, thus the reason why we want to play them," Joseph
added.
Grenada will play St Kitts and Nevis in a two-match
friendly on March 26 in Basseterre and on April 2 in St George’s.
Meantime, General Secretary of the GFA, Victor Daniel has
confirmed that members of the national team which finished fourth in the
Digicel Caribbean Cup in Martinique will be rewarded.
He didn’t disclose the extent of the incentives but it’s
likely that all players and staff of the team which participated in the
tournament will be rewarded.
The team qualified for their second appearance in the
CONCACAF Gold Cup Tournament and also moved considerable in the football
rankings – 92nd in the FIFA/Coca-Cola World Ranking; 9th
in the Continental Ranking and 3rd in the Caribbean Football Union
Ranking.
