James posts world leading time in 400m

by Michael Bascombe
NEW YORK, February 27, 2011 - Grenadian star athlete Kirani James ran a race of his life as he won the men’s 400m in a world leading time of 44.80 seconds at the 2011 Southeastern Conference Indoor Championships (SEC) at the Randal Tyson Tack Centre in Fayetteville, Arkansas on Sunday.
James was compelled to go into his reserves after watching Tony McQuay of Florida won the first of the two section event in 45.21, ahead of race favourite and world leader Torin Lawrence of Georgia (45.82).
The Grenada native and Alabama sophomore completed the first bend in 21.19 seconds and then left the rest of the field as he powered his way to win in a world leading a new SEC record of 44.80 seconds.
He also posted the fastest junior men’s indoor time (not officially recognised by the IAAF) beating the earlier mark of 44.93 by LaShawn Merritt of the USA six years ago.
The only person to run faster than Kirani James over the 400m indoor was Kerron Clement (44.57) at the same track on March 12, 2005.
Also in winners’ row at the SEC Championships was Colleen Felix in the women’s triple jump. From the start she was never challenged and posted 13.20m in her first attempt. She bettered her effort in the fourth attempt with the winning jump of 13.50m.
The other Grenadian in the IAAF Top List is Rondell Bartholomew with 45.84, a time he clocked on the same track two weeks ago.
In an immediate reaction, Sports Minister Patrick Simmons congratulated all three athletes on their splendid performances over the past few weeks.
Simmons said that the Government of Grenada will continue to support our sportsmen and women as they carry the nation’s flag.
“On behalf of the government and people I would like to congratulate Kirani and Colleen on their performances this weekend and also commendation to Rondell and the other athletes who continue to excel,” he said.

OAS Secretary General Concludes Consultations on Haiti with CARICOM Heads of Government

ST GEORGE’S, Grenada, February 26, 2011 - The Secretary General of the Organization of American States (OAS), José Miguel Insulza, and Heads of Government from the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) today concluded extensive consultations on developments in Haiti, specifically the ongoing electoral process and the work of the Joint OAS-CARICOM Electoral Observation Mission (JEOM).
During their discussions, Secretary General Insulza underscored the importance of having a good second round of elections to ensure the legitimacy of the next government in Haiti, which, he noted, would be an important requirement for the continued reconstruction efforts in that country.
The head of the hemispheric Organization acknowledged the challenges of organizing the first round of elections in Haiti just 10 months after the devastating January 12, 2010, earthquake, and praised the Haitian authorities for making the decision to proceed with the elections, notwithstanding the numerous challenges. Insulza assured CARICOM Heads of Government that the OAS would continue to support efforts to strengthen the democratic process in that OAS-founding Member State.
In commenting on the work of the JEOM, the OAS Secretary General said, "This Joint Observation Mission is very unique and is the first of its kind ever undertaken by the OAS. CARICOM and the OAS have enjoyed the highest level of cooperation in this mission.”
The CARICOM Heads of Government and the OAS Secretary General also reaffirmed their commitment to supporting Haiti's reconstruction efforts and look forward to a peaceful, fair and transparent second round of voting on March 20.
The OAS Secretary General and the Caribbean leaders held discussions in Grenada within the framework of a meeting of Heads of Government of CARICOM.
Secretary General Insulza also held bilateral meetings with the Prime Ministers of Grenada, Tillman Thomas; Belize, Dean Barrow; Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Ralph Gonsalves; the President of Suriname, Desiré Delano Bouterse; and the Deputy Prime Minister of The Bahamas, Brent Symonette.

Literary Night in Toronto

TORONTO, Canada - The story ended. The wire was bent. And we certainly did ‘write we nen nen’.
‘Crick Crack’ ~ A celebration of Grenadian writers and poets held at the office of the Consulate General of Grenada - Toronto was an overwhelming success.
A collaborative event of the Consulate General’s office and Spice Youth Toronto, the event formed a part of the celebration of Grenada’s 37th anniversary of independence.
The theme for this year’s independence conceptualized by Jelen Thomas a 10 year old student from St. Andrew’s Grenada ‘Celebrating 37 years through challenging times with optimism and resilience’ was certainly exemplified at this event.
Consul General, Mrs. Jenny Gumbs opened the event and Mr. Caldwell Taylor, a learned historian was the Master of Ceremony. The event was graced by the presence of Minister of Youth Empowerment and Sports – Mr. Patrick Simmons and Mr. Jim Karygiannis, PC MP Scarborough Agincourt.
‘Crick Crack’ featured presentations by Hudson George, Rowley Jeffrey, spoken word artist Al St. Louis and Dr. Andrea Davis of York University. A dash of spice was added to the event by an entertaining and vibrant reading of an expert from Merle Collins ‘Angel’ by a group of talented young people: Marie Benjamin, Trisha Mitchell and Neil Williams.
Donated by Mr. Dudley Hood, and on display throughout the evening, were several artifacts and antique text books used in the early 1900’s.
Also on exhibition were books by several of our Grenadian writers and poets including Jennifer Hosten, Anthony DeRiggs, Beverley Steele, Richardo Keens-Douglas, Lincoln Depradine and Sr. Gabrielle Mason to name a few.
The versatility and intelligence of the Grenadian people, who have and continue to overcome challenges with an indestructible resilience and unshakable optimism, were certainly on full display.

Books: Review - Time to Tell: The Grenada Massacre and after… By Gus John

Gus John (right) with academic  Dr Lez Henry, who
chaired the London book launch

Published: 24 February, 2011
by ANGELA COBBINAH

Educationist Gus John’s diary may help reveal the truth about Grenada’s tragic events of 1983

IT was a scene reminiscent of the Egyptian and Tunisian uprisings, recalls Gus John. Thousands of people had advanced on the prime minister’s home and released him from house arrest. But as they waited to hear Maurice Bishop address them, he was seized by the army and executed by firing squad along with 10 of his loyalists.
His killers were the very comrades with whom he had seized power to form a radical government in Grenada four years earlier. Hundreds lost their lives in the chaos that preceded and followed the executions, including John’s father who had been unable to get to hospital because of a military curfew.
Then, a few days later on October 25 1983, the US embarked on its first major military operation since Vietnam by invading the tiny Caribbean nation, making the most of the anarchy to remove the regime that had been supported by Cuba and, by extension, the Soviet bloc. It was to be one of the final episodes of Cold War brinkmanship.
When the grief-stricken John managed to return to Grenada from London a few weeks later, he kept a diary detailing the pain and confusion his compatriots felt over the horrific end of the “Revo” – not the US invasion but the betrayal of those who had decided to end their political differences by the gun.
The release last year of the last of the 17 people convicted of involvement in Bishop’s murder prompted John, a former education director of Hackney Council, to publish his diary. In it he calls on them to “cleanse their souls” by explaining their role in the executions and why unarmed civilians were gunned down, including children.
Time to Tell: the Grenada Massacre and after… has prompted an island-wide debate on the events of 1983, which remain an open wound on the national psyche. “We want closure to this catastrophic episode in Grenada’s history,” he says. “To this day, many people don’t know where the bodies of loved ones [killed during the massacre] have been buried.”
Grenada’s “man-made hurricane” began after Bishop was placed under house arrest following ideological differences with his deputy Bernard Coard. “When 60 per cent of the population went to release Maurice, it was a scene not unlike what we have seen in Tunisia and Egypt,” said John at the book’s UK launch last Friday. But the bloodshed that followed was unprecedented in the Caribbean. Among those shot dead with Bishop was his pregnant wife, the education minister Jacqueline Creft. As the crowds tried to flee the horrific executions, up to 200 were killed.
Two things strike you as you read the book. First, that the People’s Revolutionary Government that seized power in a bloodless coup in 1979 had enjoyed widespread support among Grenadians, who wholeheartedly embraced the opportunity of being active participants in the running of their country.
Second, contrary to the condemnation of the US invasion adopted by progressives everywhere, the majority of Grenadians welcomed it as rescuing them from the terror that had engulfed them, in a country no bigger than the Isle of Wight.
John describes Coard and Bishop as “school mates” whom he later worked with in London during anti-racist campaigns the 1960s. He had every reason to be optimistic about the future of a government led by them and the health, housing and education reforms that followed seemed to confirm his instincts. It remains a mystery as to why it all went so horribly wrong.
When Coard and his 16 associates were handed down lengthy prison sentences, they were regarded as victims of an improper trial and a campaign sprang up to free them. Judging from John’s book, they would have attracted little sympathy from Grenadians themselves.

Fertilizer for banana and other agricultural production

St. George’s, February 21, 2011 (GIS) – Local farmers who have been requesting fertilizer for agricultural production have now had their request met.
“The farmers will be very happy to know that we got the chemically blended fertilizer which they have been asking for,’’ Agriculture Minister Denis Lett announced Monday.
He was speaking at a ceremony marking the receipt of nearly 4,000 bags of fertilizer from Morocco.
Arrangement for the fertilizer was negotiated last year by former Foreign Minister Peter David and was included as part of a Grenada-Morocco cooperation agreement.
A symbolic handover of the fertilizer was conducted Monday, February 21, by current Foreign Minister Karl Hood to Agriculture Minister Lett.
The handing over ceremony was attended by Mr. David, current Minister of Tourism and Civil Aviation; and Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Elizabeth Henry-Greenidge.
Minister Lett said the fertilizer, costing more than EC$341,000, will be welcomed by farmers, including those involved in banana and cocoa production.
“This will go a long way in alleviating some of the problems that our farmers have been experiencing over the years,’’ he said. “We had a series of meetings around the island and farmers have been complaining that they cannot get sufficient fertilizer for their crops.’’
Morocco is one of the world’s largest fertilizer producers. The 110 pound bag fertilizer donated to Grenada costs about EC$200 each.
MP Lett, who is also Minister of Forestry and Fisheries, said the receipt of the Moroccan fertilizer will assist government in its ongoing attempts to resuscitate agricultural production in bananas and other crops.
“We have received fertilize for cocoa, types of bananas and for vegetable and root crops too,’’ he said.
Minister Hood described the negotiation of the fertilizer as an example of the initiatives that are carried out by the Foreign Affairs Ministry.
“One of these initiatives was the initiative with Morocco. And out of that relationship, Grenada has benefitted with a quantity of fertilizer, scholarships and some financial support,’’ he explained.
The Foreign Minister expressed delight that the Ministry of Agriculture will be using the fertilizer for “the good of our farmers and the good of our country.’’
Minister David described the arrival of the fertilizer in the country as an “excellent development,’’ noting that agriculture is one of the key areas in Grenada quest for further economic development.
He said he was happy that the promise of the fertilizer donation had materialised.
“Because many times you have discussions and you have promises made and they are not fulfilled,’’ he said. “I’m happy to see this one fulfilled. I know that Minister Hood, as Minister of Foreign Affairs, will continue that relationship; and will continue to seek not only assistance from Morocco, but from many other areas throughout the world.’’

Joint effort results in new homes for St. George South residents

St. George’s, February 20, 2011 – New homes have been built for two residents of St. George South in a private-sector supported effort that involved dozens of volunteers, including government ministers.
Raymond Stroude, a 50-year-old diver has been living in a tiny box-like structure of plywood and with a galvanized roof held down by stones, since his house was destroyed by Hurricane Ivan in 2004. He is one of the two recipients of the houses that were built last Saturday at Café Beau Hill, Grand Anse.
“I feel happy about it,’’ Stroude said in reference to his new home in the community in which he has lived for about 20 years.
The second housing recipient, who is epileptic, has been homeless, said MP for St. George South Glynis Roberts, who spearheaded Saturday’s projects.
“It’s an effort to bring people’s lives to a certain standard. So we’re happy to be of assistance,’’ said Hon. Roberts, who is also Minister of Labour, Social Security and Ecclesiastical Affairs.
She thanked the volunteers, corporate sector and her government and National Democratic Congress party colleagues.
“It’s contributions of material and food from the business community and individuals that made this all possible,’’ Mrs. Roberts said. “I want to thank them immensely. I also want to say thank you to the people from the other constituencies who are here today.’’
MP Roberts said an attempt will be made to solicit furniture for the two new homeowners. She and other NDC officials also promised that the party will be leading ongoing community projects throughout Grenada, Carriacou and Petite Martinique.
Many Café Beau Hill residents appealed for the paving of the community’s road. Works Minister and MP for St. Patrick West, Joseph Gilbert, assured them that his ministry will endeavour to meet their request and pave the road.
Apart from Mr. Gilbert and Mrs. Roberts, other Cabinet officials involved in Saturday’s housing projects were Tourism Minister and NDC General Secretary, Peter David; St. George South East MP and Minister of Foreign Affairs, Foreign Trade and Environment, Karl Hood; and Minister of State for Information, Culture and Information and Communication Technology, Sen. Arley Gill.
