Jason Roberts (sportdesktops) |
Jason Roberts, MBE,
will be captaining a team made up of fellow professional footballers and his
own Foundation staff, using fully adapted electric powerchairs. Two teams made
up from the Aspire and Evergreen squads will compete in a round robin
tournament against the Foundation team.
The event has been
organised to raise the profile of the Jason Roberts Foundations input into
disability sport in the West London area, and also to promote the sport of Powerchair
football in general. Rikin Shah, a Powerchair footballer with Aspire and
Evergreen, and who also coaches for the Jason Roberts Foundation and is a lead
coach in the Foundations’ disability strategy, came up with idea.
He stated "For
professional players to take an interest in our adapted football game is
brilliant. Jason has been very supportive of disability football since my
involvement with the Foundation and it will be fantastic to compete against
professional footballers in this tournament, as a wheelchair user".
Jason Roberts said,
"I’m pleased to have the opportunity to compete in this event with my fellow
professionals. The disability programme the Foundation has run is close to our
hearts and underlines the philosophy of our work in offering a sporting chance. Both
Rikin and Rob Burton have been fundamental in enabling the Foundation to launch
the disability programme in the UK and Grenada".
Steve Kelly from
Aspire said “Both Aspire Powerchair Sports Club & Evergreen Powerchair
Football Club are pleased to have the fantastic opportunity to work with the
Jason Roberts Foundation.
We hope this event
will not only highlight the Jason Roberts Foundation, but also the sporting
opportunities available for Powerchair users and the sport of Wheelchair
Football in general”
The event will take
place at Watford Woodside Leisure Centre, WD25 7HH from 2 pm. For more
information on the event contact the Jason Roberts Foundation on 07900 803905
