GFA told to develop the sport at all levels

ST. GEORGE'S, Grenada - The newly elected executive of the Grenada Football Association (GFA) should work to ensure that football is developed at all levels, according to two local sports journalists. Ray Roberts and Michael Bascombe, who combined more than half a century of sports reporting, believe that the "Ram" Folkes administration has a platform to develop on the many missed opportunities over the past four years. They were reacting to the re-election of Mr. Folkes as President of the GFA following its Annual General Meeting on Saturday. American Airlines Adds Miami-Grenada Service to Schedule

Nonstop Flights to Start Nov. 20, 2008

MIAMI, April 23 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- American Airlines will open another new route from South Florida to the Caribbean this fall when the airline begins nonstop service from Miami to the southern Caribbean island of Grenada.

American will begin flying between Miami and Grenada on Nov. 20, 2008, using Boeing 737-800 aircraft configured with 16 seats in First Class and 132 seats in the Main Cabin.

American's upcoming service from Miami is the only nonstop service currently scheduled between South Florida and Grenada, which is located approximately 100 miles off the coast of Venezuela.

The new service complements existing flights to Grenada from San Juan, Puerto Rico, offered by American Eagle, the regional affiliate of American Airlines.

Known as the "Spice of the Caribbean" for the abundance of spices the island produces, Grenada is also well-regarded for its cool sea breezes, unhurried pace, picturesque towns, lush rain forests, stunning beaches, and exquisite coral reefs.

"Grenada is a wonderful addition to American's schedule from South Florida," said Peter J. Dolara, American's Senior Vice President - Miami, Caribbean and Latin America. "It has much to offer visitors, and American's convenient nonstop flight from Miami puts it all virtually at South Florida's doorstep. Our connecting service via the Miami hub brings Grenada closer to dozens of other cities as well."

"Visitors to Grenada can expect to experience some of the best that the Caribbean has to offer, including lovely scenery, magnificent weather, relaxing beaches, lively culture, and a wide variety of activities," said the Hon. Clarice Modeste Curwen, Grenada's Minister of Tourism. "We welcome American's nonstop service from Miami, just as we welcome all those who come to see and enjoy the Caribbean of their dreams."

Here is American's schedule between Miami and Grenada, effective Nov. 20. (Northbound service begins Nov. 21). Flights operate daily, except during spring and fall, when service operates five days a week. All times shown are local.

Grenada is the third Caribbean destination from South Florida to be added to American's schedule this year. Earlier, American announced it will begin nonstop service from Fort Lauderdale to Kingston, Jamaica, in June, and from Miami to Antigua, also starting Nov. 20.

These destinations join a list of other schedule enhancements that American and American Eagle have recently made available to South Florida travelers. This past December, American began nonstop flights from Miami to Barranquilla, Colombia, and Santa Cruz, Bolivia, as well as from Fort Lauderdale to San Jose, Costa Rica. In addition, December also saw the start of nonstop service from Miami to Phoenix on American, and from Miami to Sarasota/Bradenton, Fla., and Savannah, Ga., on American Eagle.

Last month, American Eagle began nonstop flights from Miami to Tallahassee, Fla.

GFA to elect new Executive

ST. GEORGE’S, Grenada, April 23 – Candidates vying for the presidency of the Grenada Football Association (GFA) continue to crisscross the island in an attempt to canvass votes for elections on Saturday.

Ashley “Ram” Folkes, the incumbent, Cheney Joseph, a vice-president and Paul Roberts, a former director, are all seeking to become the new President of the GFA.

The presidential candidates have been meeting with representatives of affiliates and presenting their slate as well as an agenda for the running of the association for the next four years.

One of the first tasks of the new GFA administration will be to give attention to Grenada’s hosting of the CONCACAF World Cup Qualification game between Grenada and Costa Rica on June 14.

The new officers will also be forced to reorganise the GFA which has been dogged with accusations of poor administration over the past three years.

The elections of officers will be held during the Annual General Meeting of the GFA at the auditorium of the Grenada Boys’ Secondary School (GBSS) on Saturday.

Redhead and Munroe sweep conference weekly honors

Virginia Beach, Va. - Bethune-Cookman University track & field picked up two weekly awards this week form the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) as Joel Redhead and Dianne Munroe earned Track & Field Performers of the Week. The announcement was made Thursday afternoon by the conference office headquarters in Virginia Beach, Va.

Dianne Munroe, a 5-foot-8 junior from Vryheid's Lust, E.C.D., Guyana, transferred into the Wildcats program for second-year head coach Garfield Ellenwood this year from the track-heavy program of Essex County College. She qualified for the NCAA Regionals with a time of 11.47 in the 100m dash at the Miami Elite Invitational.

Munroe's time is the fastest 200m time, among conference competitors, this outdoor season. The junior was also a member of the NCAA Qualifying 4x400m relay team that took home third place honors with a time of 3:14.76.

As for Joel Redhead, he came to B-CU from Grenada and is also another product of Essex County College.

This past weekend, Redhead posted a NCAA Regional qualifying time of 46.57 in the 400m dash at the Miami Elite Invitational. His time of 20.96 in the 200m dash also qualified for the NCAA Regionals. Redhead ran the second leg of the 4x100 relay that successfully captured the gold with a time of 40.95.

Reporters Without Borders protests to PM Mitchell

Dr. Keith Mitchell

Prime Minister of Grenada

Ministerial Complex

Botanical Gardens

Tanteen, St George’s

Dear Mr Prime Minister:

Reporters Without Borders is alarmed to learn that freelance journalists Rawle Titus and Linda Straker (who is also the regional correspondent for Reporters Without Borders) are being accused of working with the opposition and that anonymous leaflets attacking them appeared in the streets of St George’s on 14 April.

The leaflets showed pictures of the two journalists along with those of three leaders of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), the main opposition to your New National Party (NNP).

In cartoon-style, they show the two journalists addressing to a policeman (suspected of spying on NDC leaders) who held a press conference on 9 April at which he was asked tough questions by journalists, including Straker and Titus.

In the leaflets, Straker and Titus are shown asking imaginary questions. Straker says: “Officer, the NDC pays me to ask you stupid questions so you better answer me or else.” Titus is saying: “If we the NDC get into office, the police don’t have any say, so you better answer my questions now or else.” The three politicians are shown making remarks about an alleged assault on the policeman by NDC supporters.

These unfounded attacks directly question the professional honesty of the two journalists and could put them in physical danger, especially in the upcoming election campaign. The accusations against them go beyond the personal and undermine one of the main principles of the rule of law: freedom of information. The job of journalists everywhere is to ask questions so as to keep the public informed. Governments and civil servants, who answer to the public, must be the first to submit themselves to unrestricted public scrutiny.

We approach you not just as prime minister and information minister (and thus regulator and guarantor of press freedom) but also as NNP political leader. Though these defamatory leaflets are anonymous, we have reason to believe they have been produced by activists of your party.

We know the courts will deal with Straker’s legal complaint against the leaflet’s authors but in the meantime we ask you to make every effort to ensure that further attempts to intimidate journalists are not made. The job of journalists is much more important in an election year since the media enables the public to assess party programmes and make a free choice.

We trust you will give this matter your best attention.

Respectfully,

Robert Ménard

Secretary-General

The "Babsy" connection

ST GEORGE'S, April 16 -Prime Minister Dr. Keith Mitchell seems to have a penchant for words and images that are as contrasting as night and day and as contradictory as calling an animal a "bull cow.''

Dr. Mitchell, only recently in a national radio and television address, cast himself as the "law and order'' Prime Minister of Grenada. He attempted to berate the parliamentary opposition, and in particular the Member of Parliament for the Town of St. George, for befriending people the PM deemed as criminal elements and other types of misfits.

Yet, the Prime Minister had no qualms about inviting Olivia "Babsy'' Grange, Minister of Information, Youth and Sports in the Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) government, to address the annual women's convention of the ruling New National Party.

Grange, in addressing the convention last month in Tivoli, said she would be ready to return to Grenada to assist the NNP in the upcoming election campaign. However, one wonders which Babsy Grange will show in Grenada if Dr. Mitchell decides to take her up on her offer. Will it be the smooth-talking Babsy Grange that addressed the convention Sunday or the "other'' Babsy, whose name was linked to Oliver Smith, alias 'Bubba?' He was the notorious leader of the powerful 'One Order' gang in Jamaica and lost his life in a violent shooting incident.

After the shooting in Central St. Catherine, police called in Grange for questioning in relation to a Honda Civic motor car that Smith was driving at the time of his death. The lawmen said the car was registered in the names of Grange and Andrew Hope, alias 'Bun Man', who was second in line to Smith.

Glenroy Sinclair and Rasbert Turner, who covered the story for the Jamaica Gleaner, said that Grange denied that she was the owner of the vehicle, pointing out that she only assisted by guaranteeing a loan for one of her constituents to acquire the motor car.

The reporters added: "Preliminary investigations have revealed that Ms. Grange's name was on supporting documents as the part-owner of the vehicle that she allegedly purchased for $704,000 on December 24, 2003, from a car dealer on Constant Spring Road, St. Andrew.''

Grange, in a press release at the time, said that as guarantor for the car loan she was required to include her name on the motor vehicle documents.

However, the Gleaner said its investigation revealed that it is not mandatory, though optional, for guarantors of motor vehicle loans to display their names on official documents. The Gleaner said that although Grange denied that the $704,000 was paid by her, she was also "unable to explain how Smith got possession of the car, but confirmed that she, in fact, stood as a guarantor for Mr. Hope.''

Prior to this incident, police said Hope had been implicated in a case of shooting. And they allege that Smith was the mastermind behind a $3-million robbery of a supermarket. Grenada could also do without the kind of shooting incident that marred Grange's JLP election campaign last year.

One evening at around 6:30 in Spanish Town, the car in which Grange was travelling was riddled with bullets, leaving two men hospitalized.

Grange, who escaped unhurt but was visibly shaken, said afterwards: "I can't believe I'm alive as I was sitting in the back of the car. When I heard the explosions the only thing I could do was tell the driver to drive."

Police said the convoy with Grange was proceeding along Church Street when upon reaching the corner of Wellingston Street, a man on foot started firing shots at the vehicle in which she was travelling.

Dr. Mitchell was also responsible for bringing Grange's JLP colleague, Joan Gordon Webley, into Grenada to work as one his advisors and campaign strategists.

Webley, who was implicated in the suspicious death of her husband in Jamaica a few years ago, has been blamed for what many Grenadians now consider the overdone and overused "colour divide in the island,'' in which ties to political organizations are made by associating certain colours with particular political parties.
