ST GEORGE’S, Grenada, February 28, 2011 - The Grenada Football Association (GFA) is seeking to engage the Government of Grenada in a strategic partnership in order to develop the sport on the island.
In an interview, GFA President, Cheney Joseph noted that the GFA and
government must form such an alliance to ensure the nation's youth are directed
in the right direction.
Joseph wants government to consider its role in assisting the
association in finding a permanent home for the sport as well as a training ground
for the national team.
The former national midfielder wants to see proper venues being made
available for clubs and association to collect revenue.
"We want to forge a partnership with government, to provide improvement
in infrastructure, training for all of the nation's youth in football and
support for our national programmes,” said Mr. Joseph.
The GFA is currently working on a four-year strategic plan, but some
of these will require government's support and input, according to the GFA
President. He said a semi-professional league, employment opportunities for national
players as well as additional human and financial resources for affiliates are
key to the success of the association.
"We want to see our Spice Boyz on the podium in a CONCACAF Gold
Cup tournament; we want to see more of our home grown players on the international
arena. We believe government is the right partner, football is the greatest
sport in the world, the most popular on the island and government has to play a
pivotal role," Joseph said.
The new executive committee and the Minister of Sports have already
met and discussed the way forward.
The GFA is hoping for government support in securing lands in Queen's
Park for its offices and academy as well as a Technical Centre.
