St. George’s, February 1, 2012 – A St. John resident has designated February as the “Month of Lights’’
for sporting enthusiasts in the west coast parish.
For the three days each week during February, Senator Arley Gill is
footing the electricity bill for parishioners to play and recreate for a
two-hour period at Cuthbert Peters’ Park.
The three days are Monday, Wednesday and Thursday.
“I will pick up the cost of the electricity for the three nights,
between the hours of 6 pm and 8 pm. The first of these nights is Wednesday,
February 1,’’ said Sen. Gill, Minister of State in the Ministry of Tourism,
Civil Aviation and Culture. He is also Public Relations Officer of the ruling
National Democratic Congress (NDC).
“This initiative of the Month of Lights has been endorsed by senior
members of the NDC and I’m appreciative of their support,’’ said Sen. Gill.
“Embarking on the idea is a token of appreciation to St. John which has
produced so many great national athletes, including current 400 Meter World
Champion, Kirani James. February is also when we celebrate our independence,’’
Sen. Gill added. “This, too, can be considered a small tribute to our
independence.’’
During the month, Sen. Gill said he would be particularly interested in
seeing training at the park by members of the St. John’s football and cricket
teams, as well as secondary school students preparing for this year’s Inter-Col
track and field games.
“We need to bring the Inter-Col championship to the parish,’’ the
Senator said.
Cuthbert Peters’ Park was fitted with lights last year as part of a
playing fields’ lighting program of the NDC government headed by Prime Minister
Hon. Tillman Thomas.
