Kirani James posts stadium record to take XL-Galan Stockholm

By Michael Bascombe
STOCKHOLM, February 23, 2012 - Kirani James posted a new arena record of 45.52 seconds in the Men’s 400 metres in his European Indoor debut at the 23rd XL-Galan in the Ericsson Globe Arena here on Thursday night.
The previous mark of 45.93 was set in 2000 by Alejando Cardenas of Mexico.
It was James’ third consecutive victory on the 2012 Indoor Circuit and it was his final race before the IAAF World Indoor Championships in Turkey next month.
The World Champion from Daegu 2011 won easily from Chris Brown of the Bahamas (46.68), homeboy Johan Wissman (47.06) and Nick Ekelund of Denmark (47.33).
James’ time was also the fastest on the continent this season ahead of Great Britain’s Nigel Levine, who clocked 45.71 in Birmingham last Saturday.
But the Grenadian champion still leads the world this year with 45.19 posted at the USA Track & Field Classic in Fayetteville, Arkansas on February 11.
James is now the favourite to win the Men’s 400m at the IAAF World Indoor Championships in Istanbul, Turkey, March 9-11, 2012.
