Local Govt Consultation for Carriacou & PM

Wednesday October 1st, 2008 - The Ministry of Carriacou & Petite Martinique Affairs has begun holding a series of district meetings that marks the start of the establishment of local government on the islands.

The consultation is aimed at getting the public’s input on the best model of local government for Carriacou and Petit Martinique.

University West Indies (UWI) Professor Mr. Simeon McIntosh has prepared a document for study, however the local government models from other Caribbean islands such as Tobago, Dominica, and Antigua & Barbuda will be considered as well.

Speaking at a district meeting in Six Roads on Tuesday September 30th, Minister of Carriacou & Petit Martinique Affairs, Senator the Hon. George Prime said the establishment of local government will bring about better service to the people of the twin-isle constituency.

He reiterated that local government is not something new to the islands, as it existed before in the 1960’s through a district board.

He further pointed out that while his government’s watchwords are transparency, accountability and good governance, this cannot be achieved without people’s participation.

So far, six (6) district meetings were held across the island. Some of the concerns raised included the financing of the process, the timeframe for its implementation and whether it will bring additional burdens or new taxes on the people. The district meetings continue today Wednesday, October 1st at the L’Esterre R. C School, and tomorrow Thursday, October 2nd at the Harvey Vale Government School.

On Friday 3rd October, the team will visit Petite Martinique where residents will give their input into the process.
