Hotel and Ministry to Help Parents

Tuesday September 30, 2008 St George’s - The Ministry of Social Development is taking its Parenting Programme to the work place. The first institution to benefit from this initiative is the Spice Island Beach Resort.
On Monday September 29, 2008 the Ministry launched a parenting training course for staff members of the Resort. The ten week training course is aimed at improving the parental skills of members of staff, enabling them to be better equipped to deal with the challenges that are faced by parents in society. Minister for Social Development, Honorable Glynis Roberts, praised the management of Spice Island Beach Resort for embracing the opportunity to help educate staff members about parenting. Speaking at Mondays opening ceremony Minister Roberts said “it is companies like Spice Island Inn that can help us as a nation create the marriage between Ministry and corporate Grenada, as we endeavor to work together to take the country forward socially”. Also present at the opening ceremony was Managing Director of the Spice Island Beach Resort, Sir Royston Hopkin, who was delighted that his company is partnering with the Ministry in such an important venture. According to him, the Ministry does not have the resources to solve all the parental problems alone, therefore there is a need for everyone to play a part in trying to find solutions. Sir Royston said, the training will help employees to become better parents. Moreover, it will arm them with the knowledge necessary to become crusaders within the various communities helping individuals to perform their responsibilities effectively as parents. Sir Royston further stated that if a parent is having problems at home that will translate to the work place and it will affect the productivity of that individual in a negative way. It is the aim of the Parenting Division within the Ministry to partner with institutions, groups and organizations throughout the country to help parents become more self-sufficient and effective in performing their roles.
