Shalrie Joseph scores penalty kick

Grenadian Shalrie Joseph scored on a penalty kick in the 49th minute and the New England Revolution snapped a two-match winless and scoreless streak with a 1-0 victory over the expansion Vancouver Whitecaps on Saturday night.

Joseph, a seven-time MLS All-Star, scored his fourth goal of the season and second on a penalty kick after New England midfielder Benny Feilhaber was tripped in the penalty box area by Vancouver defender Wes Knight.

Joseph, who also scored on a penalty kick in the second match of the season against D.C. United, beat goalkeeper Jay Nolly with a right-footed shot to the lower left corner.

New England (3-3-4) ended a scoreless streak of 236 minutes after being shutout by Chivas USA and Colorado in its last two matches. New England, 3-1-2 at home, has scored just four goals in its last six games.

Vancouver (1-5-5) is winless in its last 10 games and 0-4-1 on the road.
