ST GEORGE’S, Grenada, May 11, 2011 - Key players in the staging of Intercol – the popular Inter-Secondary
Schools’ track and field championship – have agreed on the need for greater organisation
and, possibly, expansion of the games.
“I’m
excited about the prospects of having an improved product for the 2012
Intercol,” Sports Minister Patrick Simmons said.
He made the
comment following a meeting with Intercol partners such as chief sponsor, Scotiabank;
the Ministry of Education; the Grenada Athletic Association; and the Secondary
Schools’ Principals Association (SSPA), organisers of Intercol.
Principal
Victor Ashby, chairman of the SSPA’s Games’ Committee, described the
discussions with Mr. Simmons – coming weeks after the conclusion of the 2011
Intercol – as proactive, and applauded the minister and his ministry on the
initiative.
Mr. Ashby
said the talks, “addressed the understanding of the genesis of Intercol as well
as the possibilities for its positive development which can only do well for
the benefit and success of the Intercol experience.” Grenada’s annual Intercol
games are said to be the second largest national track and field event in the
Caribbean; drawing less spectator support only to Jamaica’s athletic meet.
Efforts are
now being made in Grenada to enhance the athletes’ quality and the overall
games’ product. Sports Ministers Simmons said the meeting’s participants were
very receptive of the vision and proposed way forward.
The agenda
items for the meeting included examination on the role of the media in
Intercol, and what structures can be put in place for improved coverage of the
event that is viewed and listened to internationally. Sports broadcast training
is a possibility and a meeting is expected to be held with media professionals
to discuss the matter.
“Good
sports broadcasting is relatively new and could really empower a nation,” Mr.
Ashby said. “Grenada has a very good sports product. Ensuring that we do good
sports broadcasting is crucial.’’
Training of
athletic coaches, inclusion of more events at Intercol, health, nutrition,
athletes’ discipline and added sponsorship of the games were also discussed at
the meeting with Mr. Simmons.
In
addition, there were talks on the infrastructure for the games, such as
re-laying of the tracks and the strengthening of the main pavilion.
