ST GEORGE’S,
March 6, 2012
– Grenada and China will sign an agreement this week for the renovation of the
track and field and football stadium at Queen’s Park.
The agreement, to be signed on Wednesday
in St George’s, will involve officials of the Governments of Grenada and China
and the China International Engineering Design and Consulting Co., Ltd.
The 18-month stadium project will include
a complete redo of the football field and athletics track and 7,000 permanent
seats, in addition to the existing bleachers.
When completed, the stadium will include a
pyramid-shaped roof, a new eight-lane Mondo track and aspects of ‘green
technology’.
The stadium will replace the current
structure which was severely damaged by Hurricane Ivan in 2004.
A Chinese Technical Team has been in
Grenada for the past two weeks meeting with officials of the Ministry of Sports
including Minister Patrick Simmons. The team also met key stakeholders
including the Grenada Athletics Association, the Grenada Football Association,
the Grenada Olympic Committee as well as the National Water and Sewerage
Authority (NAWASA) and the Grenada Electricity Services Ltd. (GRENLEC).
Officials of Grenada and China discussed
the stadium project during the signing of the Second Phase of a Technical
Cooperation Agreement last November. The agreement was for the maintenance and
lighting of the cricket stadium.
China International Engineering Design and
Consulting Co., Ltd. is partly owned by Deloul Architectural Design (Beijing)
which has developed into a well-known architectural firm. It was awarded with
A-level certificates in the construction, design, construction supervision,
construction cost consulting, preparation of urban and rural planning and
external management contract status.
