The 34-year-old striker looked to be heading for a media career after
falling out with Blackburn.
But Brian McDermott made him an offer and Roberts has fuelled Royals'
promotion charge with three goals in four games before setting up Adam Le
Fondre's winner at The Den.
Boss McDermott said: "I've known Jason since he was a teenager. I
was manager of Slough and he was making his debut for Hayes — he scored twice
and they won 3-1.
"Now, 17 years later, I have got him at last. And you can see
what he brings to the team."
Reading had to battle back after Andy Keogh's opener for Millwall. Hal
Robson-Kanu cashed in on keeper David Forde's poor punch to volley an equaliser
before Roberts raced past Tony Craig to set up Le Fondre's 76th-minute winner.
Keogh admitted: "We're gutted and we didn't do enough in the
second half. Reading never give up and it wasn't a case of them outplaying us
but us gifting it to them."
