by Michael Bascombe
The United States Sports Academy has announced the winners of its 2011 Male and Female Athletes of the Year Awards.
The world’s number one-ranked men’s tennis player, Novak Djokovic and the world’s number one-ranked women’s golfer, Yani Tseng have been named the winners.
Grenada’s Kirani James and World 400m Champion was among 24 men and women nominated for the Academy’s Athlete of the Year awards.
The winners, originally scheduled to be announced on Christmas Day, were chosen on Monday December 19.
An official of the Academy told this writer that the selection date was changed because of the overwhelming response to the online balloting and the need to make the announcement before the Christmas holidays.
