Caribbean Airlines and Grenada to renew Memorandum of Understanding

St George's, October 11th 2011 - Caribbean Airlines (CA) is interested in renewing a Memorandum of Understanding with the Grenada Government for continued air service between Grenada, Trinidad and Tobago and New York’s JFK International Airport.
The disclosure of the air carrier’s interest was made Tuesday by Tourism and Civil Aviation Minister, Peter David.
“Looking at the performance of Caribbean Airlines over the last year we are delighted that its operations have not been a burden for the Government of Grenada,’’ Minister David said.
Under the previous MOU, the Grenada Government accepted responsibility to support the service should the Airline not find the operation profitable.
Government, Minister David said, is quite satisfied with the service of Caribbean Airlines, which recorded 95 percent capacity from JFK to Grenada in the past year.
“Caribbean Airlines has been a very good airline to us, particularly around the carnival period. We experienced an increase of service from Trinidad and Tobago to Grenada,’’ said Hon. David, who is also Minister of Culture.
“We are excited,’’ he added, “that over the next few days the Government of Grenada and its executive in Trinidad and Tobago will be renewing the MOU to ensure that flights continue between Grenada   and Trinidad and Tobago, and Grenada and JFK.’’
Caribbean Airlines commenced operations to Grenada in November 2010.
The regional carrier offers two weekly flights from Grenada to JFK. The flights are Wednesdays and Saturdays.
On Sunday, Monday, Tuesday and Thursday, CA also operated two flights from Grenada to Trinidad and Tobago.
The carrier also came to Grenada’s airlift need for the carnival season; it added two more flights on August 4 and 5.
Meanwhile, Tourism Awareness Month, originally announced for October, has been rescheduled to November.
According to Minister David, a number of key Caribbean tourism officials will be in Grenada during November’s observance of Tourism Awareness Month.
“After consultation with local and regional tourism officials, whom we’ll be having with us, we have decided to push back the activities for one month,” he said.
