ST GEORGE'S, July 2, 2010 - Grenada lost a sporting icon this week. James "Ox" Johnson of St. John's Street, St. George, a former national cricketer and footballer died on Wednesday June 30, at the age of 86 years.
For many years, Ox was the main local scorer at first class and international cricket matches (Grenada, Windward Islands & West Indies) in Grenada.
Earlier this year, Ox Johnson was one of six former cricketers (Johnson, Evelyn Gresham, Victor Joseph, Joseph Gibbs, Tyrone "Sampat" Harbin and Oswald Clovey) who were honoured by the Ministry of Youth Empowerment and Sports. The occasion was the start of the inaugural National 20/20 Cricket Club Championships at Progress Park in St. Andrew.
However, he was unable to attend the ceremony due to illness.
