Six Grenadian students earned
degrees at Midwestern State University’s May 2011 Commencement exercises last
Saturday. The six were part of a group of 30 Caribbean students who also walked
the stage. In an eventful weekend for the graduates, the legendary Grenadian, Mighty
Sparrow, topped off the busy calendar with a concert at the Outdoor Education
Center. Mighty Sparrow wowed the crowd of over 300 to a frenzy showing the
energy of past years.
Jeremy Joseph earned a master of
business administration degree. He earned a baccalaureate in the same discipline
three years earlier.
Rondell Bullen earned a master’s
in education.
Ariana Persaud earned a bachelor
of science in chemistry.
Kerry Wilson, Shornalle Baptiste
and Calesha John earned bachelor of business administration degrees in
accounting. Wilson and Baptiste both achieved cum laude honors.
Keynote speaker, Joan Underwood,
Antiguan Ambassador to South America, reminded the graduates and the attending
crowd of over 300 to be cognizant of the social contract with the region as
they develop economically and professionally.
Over 150 Grenadian students have
earned degrees from Midwestern since 1995 and sixty-five students are currently
enrolled, making it the largest contingent from the Caribbean. Twenty new
students from Grenada will be accepted to Midwestern State University in August
2012, and will be part of the over 1000 who have been recruited in the 18-year
history of the programme, which is also supported by the Government of Grenada.
