ST GEORGE’S, May
2, 2011 - The
Grenada Government has congratulated the members of the national relay teams
which participated in the Penn Relays in Philadelphia, USA on the weekend.
The congratulatory message was conveyed by
Sports Minister Patrick Simmons on behalf of the government and people of
Grenada to the ten (10) athletes and one coach who represented the island at
the prestigious Relay Carnival at Franklin Field in Pennsylvania.
The women 4x400m relay team finished sixth
and the male version was third behind the United States and the Bahamas.
“Your performances on the weekend are
another manifestation that despite our size we could compete on the world
stage, and I want to congratulate you on your effort,” said Minister Simmons.
“The government is fully supportive of
your preparations for the upcoming international competitions and I want to
reiterate our commitment to reconstruct the National Stadium to assist in your
preparations.”
He said that the continued upgrading and
lighting of playing fields project is testimony of government’s commitment in
providing resources for the development of our sportsmen and women.
At the Penn Relays, the team of Neisha
Bernard-Thomas, Trish Bartholomew, Kanika Beckles and Janelle Redhead finished
in 3:36.03 while Joel Redhead, Kirani James, Kemon Herry and Rondell
Bartholomew clocked 3:04.69.
The other members of the team were Allison
George and Kevin Bowen and the coach, Albert Joseph.
The teams are attempting to qualify for
the IAAF World Championships in South Korea in August and the Olympic Games in
London in 2012.

Mr Minister you must make ever effort to get the stadium track repaired in time for the next track and field season. I have every confidence you can make it happen.
