Government congratulates athletes

ST GEORGE’S, May 2, 2011 - The Grenada Government has congratulated the members of the national relay teams which participated in the Penn Relays in Philadelphia, USA on the weekend.
The congratulatory message was conveyed by Sports Minister Patrick Simmons on behalf of the government and people of Grenada to the ten (10) athletes and one coach who represented the island at the prestigious Relay Carnival at Franklin Field in Pennsylvania.
The women 4x400m relay team finished sixth and the male version was third behind the United States and the Bahamas.
“Your performances on the weekend are another manifestation that despite our size we could compete on the world stage, and I want to congratulate you on your effort,” said Minister Simmons.
“The government is fully supportive of your preparations for the upcoming international competitions and I want to reiterate our commitment to reconstruct the National Stadium to assist in your preparations.”
He said that the continued upgrading and lighting of playing fields project is testimony of government’s commitment in providing resources for the development of our sportsmen and women.
At the Penn Relays, the team of Neisha Bernard-Thomas, Trish Bartholomew, Kanika Beckles and Janelle Redhead finished in 3:36.03 while Joel Redhead, Kirani James, Kemon Herry and Rondell Bartholomew clocked 3:04.69.
The other members of the team were Allison George and Kevin Bowen and the coach, Albert Joseph.
The teams are attempting to qualify for the IAAF World Championships in South Korea in August and the Olympic Games in London in 2012.
