KIRANI JAMES AND MARTY PHILLIP LIT UP NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS

by Grenada Athletics Association

Kirani James pulverized the 400m Games Record at the Cable and Wireless National Championships. His time of 47.10 erased Rodney George’s mark of 51.00 set in 2001. The World Youth silver medalist was slow of the blocks but sped past everyone at the 150-metre mark and strode home elegantly 30 metres ahead of his nearest rival being roared on by spectators who filled the stands awaiting this performance from a 15 year-old wonder boy.

They were not disappointed because it was first time they would have seen a 15 year-old ran that fast over 400m.

The other unlikely heroine of the first day of competition was Marty Phillip. After a five-year hiatus from the sport she won the 100m in 11.88 secs and the 400m in 57.80. Marty is well known for her exploits at Carifta Games in the hurdle events. However, she faded away but is now making a come back and what a come back it was. She looks better than before and was a crowd favourite as she graced the track with her charm and magnificent stride.

St. Andrew’s Anglican Secondary School (SAASS) leads the points table with exactly 100 points after a very keen and excited opening day of the Cable and Wireless National Championships. They are followed by St.David’s Track Blazers with 70.50 points McDonald College 65, and Speed Zone 56.

A total of 450 athletes are participating from 15 clubs and schools. The Games started late due mainly to early morning showers and the late arrival of officials which led to a very late finish at 7.30pm. But it was scintillating stuff which the over 3000 spectators thoroughly enjoyed and not a single spectator left the Stadium until the last race was run.

The second day promises much with the 200m, 800m and Relays and a host of field events.

Kirani James would also be attempting to break the 200m Games record in the Youth Division and SAASS WOULD BE LOOKING TO WIN THE TEAM PRIZE WHICH WOULD SEND A SIGNAL TO OTHER SCHOOLS WITH INTERCOL ONLY TWO WEEKS AGO, MARCH 12 & 13.
