ST GEORGE'S, Grenada, Oct 12 – The Grenada Government Friday said it will spend more than $5 million (US$1.9 million) on upgrading playing fields in the rural areas of the country in 2008.
The announcement was made as Governor General Sir Daniel Williams delivered the traditional Throne Speech to mark the start of the fifth session of the seventh Parliament.
The government said it will also embark on the lighting of playing fields as well as expand outdoor sporting programmes.
"In 2008, we'll through the Ministry of Sports, deepen the implementation of our playing field lighting projects, expand outdoor sports outreach programme and hosting the Windward Islands Secondary School programme," Sir Daniel said.
He said the government also plans to complete the establishment of the Sports Medicine Programme and also the second phase upgrading of the pavilion at the Cuthbert Peter's Park in the western parish of St. John.
According to Sir Daniel the project is estimated to cost about $5.2 million.
The government said that the performance of the nation's sportsmen and women at regional and international sporting events are commendable.
"We continue on the shoulders of our young people to excel regionally and internationally in sports, especially athletics, cricket and swimming," adding that "our performance ay the Pan American Games is particularly noteworthy".
Grenada won a bronze medal at the Pan Am Games in Rio de Janeiro in July, dethroned St Lucia to win the Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS) Swimming Championships and retained the Windward Islands senior cricket tournament.
