EUGENE, OR, June 2, 2012 – World 400m Champion Kirani James of Grenada said that anticipation and anxiety may have contributed to his false starting in the star-studded 400m at the Prefontaine Classic Diamond League Meeting here on Saturday.
James, who edged American LaShawn Merritt to win the World Championship in Daegu last summer, had to settle behind the reigning Olympic Champion. The Grenadian ran under protest after the false start but it was later dismissed.
Merritt was clocked at 44.91 (his second Diamond League win) and Christopher Brown of the Bahamas promoted to runner up in 45.24 and Angelo Taylor in the third spot in 45.59.
“I think it was my fault, anticipating too much,” James told reporters.
“It’s a lost to me but I rather it happens here now than on the big day (Olympics),” he said.
James, who will be competing in his first Olympics this summer, said he may compete in two other meets before London.

Kirani should not allow disappointment to settle in his psyche. In fact, he should take the positives out of this experience, For example, while under tremendous psychological pressure coming from the DQ, being able to perform so well to force the American to work hard for his victory.
Kirani should come out of this experience knowing that once he remains mentally toughre than Le Shaun he will win triumph over him more times than he will succumb to defeat.
