James flew into Grenada on Wednesday evening as guest of the sponsor
and the Grenada Union of Teachers (GUT). He will be on the island for a few
days but will also participate in a workshop on Friday.
James, a former champion at the Primary Schools’ Championship, will
use the opportunity to encourage young Grenadian athletes to train and study
hard in order to succeed. His message to the competing athletes will centre on
performing at their best at the Caribbean Union of Teachers (CUT) Games to be
held in the Bahamas in July.
He will also distribute medals and prizes during the championship
which begins at 9:00 a.m. with the field events.
This will be his third trip to the Spice Isle since winning gold at
the IAAF World Championships in Athletics in Daegu last summer. He spent
Christmas at home with his parents and returned to the island to pick up his
award as the National Sportsman of the Year in January.
St Andrew is the defending parish champion but they could expect a
strong challenge from perennial rivals St Patrick and St George.
“Lots of preparations went into the games for Thursday, as some
parishes participated in the Relay Meet, National Championships and Southern
and Western Games,” according to an official.
