Taylor: We gave away our chances

WASHINGTON, DC, July 9, 2009 - Haiti bounced back from their opening game loss, winning 2-0 versus Grenada at RFK Stadium. The island nations now create contrasting trajectories in the Gold Cup, with Haiti's hopes rising as Grenada's fall.

First Half

Haiti had the luxury of an early goal, as former Rapids player Fabrice Noel struck on a free kick in the 14th minute.

Brunel Fucien served in the ball, and found Noel, who had the fortune to deflect the ball into the goal.

Grenada found their footing after giving up the goal, though, and did much better than they had against the United States in fighting back most of Haiti's attacks.

Haiti also perhaps relaxed a bit with the lead, and was unable to close out a few other solid chances on goal.

Grenada goalkeeper Desmond Noel was clearly the hero for the Spice Boyz, as he turned aside a number of Haiti's attempts.

Second Half

In the 58th minute, Leonel Saint Preux had a chance to add another goal for Haiti, but he took too long to loose his shot and the opportunity was lost.

The ball settled into the midfield for long stretches, though it was Haiti who had the better of possession in their search for the goal that would close out Grenada.

It did not really fall on Haiti's merit, however, and it did not come until the 79th minute.

It was an egregious blunder from defender Anthony Modeste that created Haiti's second goal. Instead of simply clearing a ball, he tried to get cute and stepped over it. Haiti's James Marcelin was not fooled, however, and quickly won the ball, leaving him a simple finish into the goal.

Marcelin did not waste the opportunity, and celebrated his goal by removing his shirt, which earned him a yellow.
