Revolution's Joseph earns Best XI honors

LOS ANGELES, Calif., Nov. 22, 2008 (NE Revs) -- New England Revolution midfielder Shalrie Joseph was voted to the 2008 Major League Soccer Best XI team, the league announced on Saturday. The Best XI is voted on by the league's general managers, coaches, players and media, and represents the top players at each position for the season.

This is Joseph's third Best XI selection in his career as he was also honored in 2005 and 2007.

Joseph's imposing physical presence and ability to control the game both on the ground and in the air have made him a key component in the New England midfield. In 2008, he played 2,384 minutes in 27 MLS games while scoring one goal and adding one assist to earn his second consecutive Best XI honor.

In outside competitions, Joseph also anchored the Revolution's SuperLiga 2008 title, scoring three goals to tie for the lead in the international competition. His game-tying goal against Houston in the championship game set the stage for the team's championship in penalty kicks.

Joseph is joined on the MLS Best XI team by goalkeeper Jon Busch (Chicago Fire); defenders Jimmy Conrad (Kansas City Wizards), Bakary Soumare (Chicago Fire) and Chad Marshall (Columbus Crew); midfielders Cuauhtemoc Blanco (Chicago Fire), Guillermo Barros Scholotto (Columbus Crew), Robbie Rogers (Columbus Crew) and Sacha Kljestan (Chivas USA); and forwards Landon Donovan (Los Angeles Galaxy) and Kenny Cooper (FC Dallas).

The MLS Best XI team will be honored at the league's annual Awards Gala, to be held later tonight.

Glean to be sworn in next Thursday

ST GEORGE’S, Grenada, Nov. 19, 2008 (PMO) - The public is advised that the swearing in ceremony for Governor General designate, Mr. Carlyle Arnold Glean will take place on Thursday 27th November at the Trade Center in Grand Anse.

The ceremony will take the form of a joint sitting of Parliament and will begin at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday. The public is invited to witness this historic event.

It was announced on Tuesday that Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth the second had approved the appointment of Mr. Glean to replace Sir Daniel Williams as the next Governor General of Grenada.

The ceremony was postponed from Wednesday due to the non-arrival of the royal commission of appointment.

Prime Minister Hon. Tillman Thomas today issued a statement thanking the former Governor General Sir Daniel Williams for his services to the state for the past 13 years.

Below is the full text of that message.

“On the behalf of the Government and people of Grenada, I thank Sir Daniel Williams for his period of service as Governor General. I also extend thanks to his wife, Lady Williams.

As we all know, Sir Daniel demitted office yesterday, the 18th day of November.

And the intention was to swear in Mr. Carlyle Glean as Governor General and at the same time to thank Sir Daniel for his years of service. However the swearing-in ceremony had to be postponed and I now take this opportunity to thank Sir Daniel for his services.

To serve the public calls for great sacrifice and commitment. Sir Daniel certainly exhibited those qualities. I know he has been contributing in different areas, including the Scout Movement, the Duke of Edinburgh Awards and other Organizations in Society. So I want to wish him well in his retirement. I want to wish him all the best. I know Sir Daniel will continue to serve because he is a community oriented person. Again, I wish him all the best in his retirement.”

Grenadian nationals want closer relationship with NY Consulate

By Michael Bascombe

NEW YORK, USA, Nov. 18, 2008 – Grenadians living in Atlanta and Miami, South Florida want to be fully integrated into the Diaspora and assist in the development of their homeland.

That was the repeated expression from nationals at two separate functions attended by Consul General Derrick James.

The Grenada Atlanta Association (GAA) held its fifth anniversary dinner and dance on Saturday under the patronage of cultural ambassador, Edison "King Ajamu" Mitchell. He was given an award for his contribution to the art form.

On Sunday, the GAA met with the Consul General to discuss ways of collaborating with the New York-based office.

GAA's Chairman Michael Roberts said his organization wants to have close and open relationship with the Consulate.

Roberts said that the GAA has been providing support to various communities and institutions in Grenada, with the Senior Home in Grand Anse, St. George's to benefit from a donation of US$15,000.00.

The Consul General thanked the GAA for its contribution especially after Hurricane Ivan. "The association was very instrumental in soliciting assistance for Grenada from the Atlanta area and reached out to the recovery efforts in Grenada," he said.

James also had a similar meeting with Grenadian nationals in Miami on Monday where he again outlined the plans of the Consulate.

He said that the Consulate will be meeting with Grenadian businessmen and women with the hope of encouraging them to support local products.

James spoke of the establishment of a student body in the United States which could provide support for the many students who are attending U.S. institutions and the proposed Diaspora Desk.

"The Diaspora Desk will be a catalyst to ensure that nationals abroad could provide assistance to their homeland. There is the idea of making a contribution by offering one or two weeks' services to Grenada during visits," he said.

In Atlanta, there was a suggestion for students to be given calling cards to call home for the Christmas Holidays.

The Atlanta organization will be making cards available to some students and is encouraging other community organisations to do likewise.

The Consul General also accepted an invitation to visit nationals in Houston, Texas since there is also a large Grenadian community in that State.

Ceremony for new GG postponed

By Michael Bascombe

ST GEORGE’S, Grenada, Nov. 18, 2008 – The swearing-in ceremony for Governor General designate Carlyle Glean will not take place on Wednesday as previously announced, according to the Office of the Prime Minister.

In a dispatched late Tuesday the Government said that the royal commission of appointment for the swearing-in ceremony did not arrive on Tuesday.

According to the Government the ceremony will take place on a date to be announced shortly.

Mr. Glean, a former Government Minister and retired University Lecturer, will become the island’s fifth Governor General since the attainment of Independence in 1974.

Mr. Glean had served as Education Minister between 1990 and 1995 under a previous administration of the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) Party.

He is replacing Sir Daniel Williams who retired on Tuesday, after serving for the past 12 years.

During a national address earlier this month Sir Daniel announced his retirement and said that he enjoyed his stint as the Head of State, and did it to the best of his ability.

“I addressed you on many occasions during the last 12 years as Governor General but this is probably my last address in that office because her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II has accepted my request for retirement,” he said.

“I will be retiring on the 18 November 2008. I am grateful to Her Majesty and the Government and people of Grenada for giving me the opportunity to serve in the highest office in this beautiful country and in my humble opinion I did the job to the best of my limited ability”.

However, Sir Daniel criticised some people and sections of the media for what he described as an attack on the Office of the Governor General and for once felt regretting his acceptance as Head of State.

“After serving this country for almost all my working life but especially the last 24 years, mainly in government and then in the last 12 years as Governor General I am enormously disappointed by the outrageous, vicious, libelous statements made by certain persons in a local newspaper about me”.

Sir Daniel said lies were told of which the correct information was available.

“It seemed to me that those who published the lies in that newspaper didn’t wish to publish the truth. Thos persons are evil because they used the lies as the basis to say many false and bad things about me,” he said.

“What is most unfortunate, the persons who made those malicious statements know that the tradition is well established that a Governor General is not expected to enter a political platform or write on the newspaper to defend himself.

Those false allegations were very offensive and for the first time in 12 years as Governor General I was forced to feel regretful that I had accepted the appointment of Governor General”.

Sir Daniel said that he is certain that talented men and women who can make a valuable contribution to government will hesitate to present themselves for service for fear of being innocently suffering disgrace and indignity at the pen of malicious persons.

Baptiste wants investigation into failed Call Centre

by Michael Bascombe

ST GEORGE’S, Grenada, Nov. 16, 2008 - A Former Opposition Leader wants the new Tillman Thomas administration to launch an investigation into the failed Grenada Call Centre which has cost the state millions of dollars.

Michael Baptiste says the government needs to act quickly to ensure that these monies are recovered especially in the economic crisis facing the country.

The Keith Mitchell-led government has been accused of allowing more than six million dollars in dividends from the then Cable & Wireless Ltd to be paid against monies owed by Grenada Call Centres Inc.

According to a 2004 report from the Director of Audit Anselm Joseph, dividends totaling $7,835,287.05 was paid by Cable & Wireless to the Government of Grenada in December 2002. $1,146,876.72 was paid by cheque and the remainder, $6,688,410.33 was set off (apparently with the Ministry of Finance approval) against monies owed to Cable & Wireless by Grenada Call Centres Inc.

“It should be noted that only $1,146,876.72 was recorded in the accounts. As a result of this omission, revenue was understated by over 6.6 million dollars on this single transaction, Joseph said.

Baptiste said that the government must give this situation urgent attention as they promised when they were in opposition.

“This present government when they were in opposition they spoke about a lot of the Call Centre and everyone is now surprised that they didn’t make that a top priority to get these monies return to the treasury,” Baptiste told GrenadaBroadcast on Sunday.

“If the government doesn’t have a copy of the original agreement of the Call Centre and I will make one available to them because I believe I have a copy and I don’t think there is any around because I believe the records were destroyed”.

The Grenada Today newspaper had reported that the former Prime Minister has assured Parliament that his family members would repay their portion of the multi-million dollar loan that was taken to set up the Call Centers at the Seamoon Industrial Park in St. Andrew's.

Janitor charged with secretly recording women in Stamford train station bathroom

STAMFORD - A janitor at the Stamford train station was charged Thursday with secretly videotaping at least 16 women in a bathroom stall with a cell phone taped to a roll of toilet paper.

Felicitos Gonzalez, 41, of 1 Division St., Apartment R, Stamford, was arrested by Metropolitan Transportation Authority police at his home a block away from the train station Wednesday.

Gonzalez was arraigned on 16 counts of voyeurism at state Superior Court in Stamford Thursday.

Judge Barbara Brazzel-Massaro ruled that Gonzalez, a Mexican native working in the country illegally, will be jailed in lieu of $50,000 bond for the Class D felony.

Gonzalez' defense attorney Howard Ehring said his client had little chance, if any of raising the money

to bond out.

Gonzalez' arrest by the Metropolitan Transportation Authority came after a 21-year-old woman used the ladies bathroom near the Dunkin' Donuts on the main floor of the train station late in the evening on Nov. 1, Gonzalez' arrest warrant says.

When the woman picked her book bag up off the floor, she tipped over a red plastic waste basked that contained five or six toilet paper rolls, she told police. As she picked up the rolls to place them back in the basket, one of the rolls felt heavy and started to beep, the warrant states.

"I ripped the toilet paper off of the roll and noticed that a camera phone had been taped to the roll. I turned the camera around and looked at the screen and noticed that it was recording the bathroom stall," she said in her witness statement to the MTA.

The woman then got on the 11:30 p.m. train to Grand Central Station. Along the way she began looking at the recordings on the phone and found a video clip of a male Hispanic man wearing a green shirt as he set the phone into a stationary position and placed toilet rolls around it, the warrant said.

The woman also saw recordings of two other women going to the bathroom before turning off the phone, the warrant said.

Two days later the woman reported the camera to a police officer at a road job and he told her to call MTA police. That same day on Nov. 3 she talked to MTA Detective Sean Connolly about the phone and turned over the phone, which still had toilet paper taped around it, according to the warrant.

The next day a property manager for Fusco Management, which runs the train station, reviewed the video recordings and identified Gonzalez as the Hispanic man pictured on the camera phone.

Gonzalez, has for the past seven months worked for Suburban Contract Cleaning, a subcontractor hired by Fusco to clean and maintain the station.

Gonzalez has been in Connecticut for seven years according to the state bail commissioner and was identified by Sprint/Nextel as the phone's subscriber, the affidavit said. Inside the phone, authorities found three video files each two hours long.

In each of the videos Gonzalez is clearly seen cutting up pieces of toilet paper and taping the paper around the lens of the camera phone. He is then seen sitting down on the toilet seat to check the view on the phone screen, the affidavit said.

In reviewing the video recordings, Connolly saw 16 women enter the stall, pull down their pants and sit on the toilet seat, the affidavit said.

It is not clear when the recordings were made.

MTA Police Sgt. John Rizzitelli said, "We knew almost immediately he was one of the station cleaners... He denied it."

Police on Wednesday also seized a home computer from Gonzalez' bedroom which is being analyzed for further images at the Connecticut State Police Crime Lab in Meriden.

The U.S. Immigration, Customs, & Enforcement Agency was notified about the case, due to Gonzalez' immigration status.

Gonzalez is no longer working at the train station, Jason Fascella, Fusco's property manager at the station said, referring further questions to Fusco's headquarters and the DOT.

DOT spokesman Judd Everhart praised the MTA Police for making the arrest.

"The MTA Police are to be commended for quick action on these allegations of outrageous criminal behavior," Everhart said. "Connecticut commuters expect and deserve safe, clean conditions at every location."

In both Stamford and Bridgeport, Fusco subcontracts for various services, including cleaning and parking tasks, DOT Spokesman Kevin Nursick said.

In 2007, Fusco received about $2.5 million to manage the Stamford station, including the cost of the subcontractors, Nursick said.

The DOT requires that all firms doing business with it follow state and federal employment and immigration laws, Nursick said.

Stamford is the busiest station on the Metro North New Haven Line after Grand Central, with an average of 4,300 getting off the train there each day - 2,500 coming from other points in Connecticut and 1,800 from New York - during the morning rush.

Wealthy Britons are discovering paradise in Barbados and Grenada

From

November 14, 2008

Simon Cowell and Lord Lloyd-Webber have already bought villas at the Cinnamon 88 development

Many of us are facing a dark winter: the global financial crisis, soaring energy prices and a crumbling housing market. For a small echelon of society, however, such woes barely intrude, and when the days become damp and dreary they simply decamp to the Caribbean.

Barbados has captivated the British and Irish since the 1930s. Back then, the Guinness family would winter at their villa on the west coast, Noël Coward entertained Winston Churchill and Claudette Colbert threw parties while David Niven mixed the cocktails.

Seventy years on and not much has changed. The sheltered, palm-fringed beaches of the west coast - renamed the Platinum Coast - are still the hub of the social scene and the location for the island's prime properties. Probably the most famous of these villas is Alang Alang, the home of the property developer Mike Pemberton, who freely admits that he spent six years designing and building his Caribbean paradise.

Such dedication has been rewarded by movie stars wanting to buy it and fashion photographers using it for cover shoots. But it is not for sale. “It's my home and I love coming back here. Every time I return, I have a huge smile on my face when I step through the door,” Pemberton says.

However, things are looking up for those admirers of the Indonesian-influenced home. Pemberton and his business partner, Robin Paterson, in their guise as the developer Cinnamon 88, have bought 32 acres of the Platinum Coast.

With the help of the Four Seasons Hotel brand, they have started building a luxury beachfront development, consisting of a five-star hotel and 35 luxury villas, in Clearwater Bay. Famous names who have already bagged a villa at Clearwater Bay include Lord Lloyd-Webber, the FormulaOne team owner Eddie Jordan and the pugnacious XFactor judge Simon Cowell - who is taking two.

The houses range from $11.5million (£7.3 million) to $40million and stretch to 18,000sqft. They are being built to the same design as Alang Alang, using aged teak doors from Indonesia, sustainably sourced wood floors from Brazil, indigenous Caribbean coral stone and chandeliers found in the flea markets of France.

However, some may find Barbados too glitzy. There is certainly a show-biz element to the island, with paparazzi camped out at the airport and on beaches over Christmas.

Cinnamon 88 has realised this, and following from the success of its Barbados development has bought 500 acres on the comparatively untouched Caribbean island of Grenada. Here the mood is definitely more laid-back. Grenada is a volcanic island, 13 per cent of which is rainforest; the Cinnamon 88 development includes a sanctuary for the endangered Grenada Dove.

The site includes a Four Seasons hotel, 170 private villas, a private island and the wooded slopes of Mount Hartman. It also has a golf course, tennis academy, marina and spa. Prices for the villas start at $3million - considerably lower than Barbados prices.

Buyers on Grenada are more concerned with privacy. Twelve plots have already been sold, three to Goldman Sachs executives, proving that the pain of the credit crunch is not being felt by some people.

Minister David clarifies Diplomatic Appointments

ST GEORGE’S, Grenada, Nov 13, 2008 - Foreign Affairs Minister Peter David has denied reports that the government of Prime Minister Tillman Thomas has appointed Mr. Georges Cohen as the new Permanent Representative of Grenada to the United Nations.

Mr. Cohen was appointed on January 15, 2007 as an Honorary Representative to the Geneva-based UN Office but only recently presented his credentials.

"We are in the process of reviewing all appointments. So far UN, Geneva and UK have been done and others will be by the end of the year," Minister David said. "In the cases where recalls will be done replacements will have to be found. Other recalls have not been done, pending performance reviews''.

In relation to UN Agencies, such as the Geneva-based office, it is an honorary unpaid job. The representative at the agency in Geneva performs representation and liaison functions with the permanent mission in New York, as well as the host Government, and other Governments, intergovernmental and non-governmental organisations, research and academic institutions at Geneva as well as other organisations of the United Nations common system at Geneva.

In the case of the Permanent Representative of Grenada to the United Nations in New York, Mr. Angus Friday has been recalled and a new ambassador will be announced shortly. Mr. Michael Mitchell is the charge d'affaires in the meantime.

The Grenada government is also soon expected to announce the name of a new fulltime ambassador who will be accredited to Geneva.

TOURISM MINISTERS SET UP UN COMMITTEE TO STRENGTHEN COOPERATION IN WAKE OF SLOWDOWN

LONDON, UK, Nov 12, 2008 - A new UNWTO Resilience Committee was announced at a Tourism Ministers Summit held to consider how to respond to the turbulent economy and stay on course with the Climate & Poverty Agenda.

Government and private sector representatives from more than 50 countries voiced strong support for the initiative.

The 2008 Ministers’ Summit concluded that the response by the tourism sector would need to be based on real time market information, innovation and increased collaboration at all levels. Greater than before public-private cooperation was identified as a key to adjust to global macroeconomic developments.

Secretary-General Francesco Frangialli stressed that “UNWTO will help the tourism industry to weather the downturn as best as possible. By the same token, we will not forget what tourism can contribute to poverty reduction in the world and to the fight against climate change.

The poor countries, some of which were already severely hit several months ago by the food crisis, will need more than ever the wealth and jobs that tourism provides for them.”

UNWTO’s Resilience Committee will be chaired by H.E. Zohair Garrana, Minister of Tourism of Egypt. Supported by UNWTO partners, including Amadeus, Microsoft and Visa, it will:

* monitor and analyse macroeconomic and tourism market trends in real time and

  • provide an information exchange for the sector on rapid and practical response

Following the Ministers’ Summit, a series of response groups focusing on the regional impacts and action by the sector will follow. The first will be held in Sharm el Sheikh (Egypt, 23-24 November) and will focus on the Middle East and Mediterranean Regions and will look at both immediate and longer term response.

100 Countries ratify Anti Doping Convention

PARIS, France, Nov 12, 2008 - UNESCO celebrated the signing of the 100th government to the International Convention against Doping in Sport in Paris today.

The Director-General of UNESCO, Koïchiro Matsuura, and the Director-General of the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA), David Howman, joined Ambassadors from most of the 100 countries that have ratified the Convention to mark the historical milestone.

Paraguay became the 100th signatory of the Convention which was adopted on 19 October 2005 and entered into force on 1 February 2007. This is UNESCO’s most successful convention in terms of speed of development and implementation.

In just three years, more than half of UNESCO’s Member States from all regions of the world committed to fighting doping in sport. “Never before have global anti-doping efforts been stronger or more focused on providing an honest and equitable playing environment for athletes,” said Mr Matsuura.

The Convention is designed to ensure a consistent approach to anti-doping efforts and compel governments into action, such as restricting the supply of performance enhancing substances and methods, curtailing trafficking and regulating dietary and nutritional supplements.

“Recent high profile doping cases and investigations have shown how decisive Government action can be,” observed Mr Howman. “The Convention allows Governments to align their domestic policies with the World Anti-Doping Code, thus harmonizing the rules governing anti-doping in sport and public legislation. WADA is very grateful to UNESCO for its leading role in this process.”

The 29th Olympiad in Beijing was the first to be held since the Convention entered into force. During this event the largest ever testing programme was conducted, involving more than 4,770 doping controls. “The International Olympic Committee is committed to doing all it can to eliminate doping from sport,” said Jacques Rogge, President of the International Olympic Committee, in a written statement.

“This fight is a number one priority. However, for us to be truly effective with our efforts, close cooperation between sports organizations and governments is crucial,” he said.

UNESCO continues to raise public awareness by working with Governments on anti-doping education, policy and prevention programmes. Jamaica, Mozambique, Mali and Uruguay were the first recipients of financial assistance through UNESCO’s Fund for the Elimination of Doping in Sport.

“While the Convention provides the roadmap, the Fund provides the means to achieve its principal objective – to promote the fight against doping so that future generations can enjoy and excel in doping-free sport,” said Mr Matsuura.

“WADA now looks forward to the ratification of the Convention by the remaining 93 Member States of UNESCO,” declared Hon. John Fahey A.C., President of WADA, in a written statement.
